Is a resting heart rate of 50 normal for non-athletes? Sometimes, but 50 beats per minute is below the usual awake resting range, and one reading can’t explain why. Verify the number while you’re awake and calm, then use symptoms and a change from your own baseline to decide how quickly to seek care.
If your pulse is suddenly very low for you and you also have chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting or confusion, call emergency services. Don’t spend a week collecting data first.
Is a resting heart rate of 50 normal for non-athletes?
A heart rate of 50 sits below the 60-to-100 beats-per-minute range often given for a calm, awake adult. The American Heart Association’s bradycardia guide calls a rate under 60 slow, while also explaining that a rate below 60 can occur during sleep and in physically active adults.
That label isn’t a diagnosis. It doesn’t mean every person at 50 has a heart problem, and it doesn’t make 59 unsafe while 60 is safe. The useful question is whether your heart is supplying enough blood for what you’re doing and whether the low number is a stable pattern, a new change or a bad measurement.
Start with context.
A reading captured while you were asleep isn’t an awake resting heart rate. A watch’s lowest overnight number isn’t comparable with a pulse counted after you sit up, walk to the bathroom and drink coffee. Pick one state and compare like with like.
“Non-athlete” doesn’t settle the question either. Some people who don’t identify as athletes still walk, cycle or do physical work regularly. Age, sleep, body temperature, medicines and several health conditions can affect heart rate. You can’t sort those causes from the number 50 alone.
A pulse of 50 is a prompt to verify the pattern, not a diagnosis and not a target you need to correct at home.
The 2018 ACC/AHA/HRS bradycardia guideline centers evaluation on symptoms, reversible causes and whether symptoms actually occur with the slow rhythm. Its chronic-care pathway sends people without correlated symptoms toward observation rather than a procedure. For a reader at home, that means the symptom column on your log matters as much as the pulse column.
Separate a sleeping 50 from an awake 50
First check what your device is reporting. Wearable apps may show a daily resting estimate, a sleeping low, a current reading and a weekly average on different screens. Those aren’t interchangeable. Write down the label beside the number instead of copying only “50.”
Then check it by hand while awake. The American Heart Association’s pulse instructions say to place your index and middle fingers over the artery on the inner wrist and count for a full 60 seconds. A full minute avoids the extra rounding that comes from counting for 10 seconds and multiplying by six.
Don’t use your thumb; its own pulse can confuse the count. Sit or lie quietly, don’t talk, and wait until you’ve recovered from walking or climbing stairs. If the beat feels irregular or you can’t count it confidently, record that problem instead of inventing a precise result.
One number isn’t enough.
A manual count that differs from the watch doesn’t prove which one is wrong. Repeat once after another quiet five minutes and save both numbers. If the gap keeps appearing, bring the device and the written counts to a healthcare appointment rather than buying a second tracker to break the tie.
Seven comparable morning counts tell you more than one alert from a night when the strap sat loose. So trust the boring repeated measurement. Skip the caffeine, cold water or quick burst of exercise that makes the display look “normal” again, because those tricks destroy the comparison and can hide the symptoms that actually matter.
Run this seven-day resting pulse check
Seven days is a practical observation period, not a diagnostic standard. It shows whether 50 repeats under the same awake conditions and whether you feel different when it does. If a clinician already gave you a number to call at, follow that instead.
- Choose one morning condition. Measure after waking, before coffee, exercise or a rushed start. If you need to get out of bed first, sit quietly for five minutes before you count.
- Count for a full minute. Find the pulse at your wrist with two fingers. Write the full 60-second count and note whether the rhythm felt regular or difficult to count.
- Save the device reading separately. Add the watch or ring number, but label it as current, resting estimate or sleeping low. Don’t average unlike measurements together.
- Add one symptom line. Record none, or write the specific symptom present at that time, such as lightheadedness, unusual weakness, breathlessness, chest discomfort or feeling close to fainting.
- Record medicines without changing them. Note the scheduled medicines and doses you actually took. Beta blockers, some calcium-channel blockers and other medicines can slow heart rate, but don’t stop or move a dose on your own.
- Review the pattern on day seven. Mark whether the awake manual pulse stayed near 50, whether it was new compared with your prior baseline and whether symptoms appeared on the same mornings.
How to read the seven rows
Keep the record small. Date, time, manual pulse, device number, rhythm note, symptom and relevant medicine all fit on one page, and one page is what a clinician can actually scan during a short appointment. A long diary makes it harder to see whether the slow reading and the symptom happened together on the same morning.
Also note the comparison you don’t have. If you’ve never measured a morning pulse before, you can’t claim that 50 is a sudden drop. Write “prior baseline unknown.” That is more useful than guessing what your number used to be.
If most awake manual counts are well above 50 while only the overnight low reaches 50, you’ve answered a measurement question rather than a medical one. If awake counts repeatedly sit near 50, the log gives a clinician something concrete to review. It still can’t identify the cause.

When a resting heart rate of 50 needs medical attention
Contact a healthcare professional if the repeated awake rate is slower than usual for you, even if you feel well, particularly when the change began after an illness or a medicine adjustment. Share the seven-day page and your full medicine and supplement list. Don’t change a prescription while waiting for the reply.
Arrange a prompt review if a low pulse repeatedly occurs with weakness, exercise intolerance, dizziness, unusual fatigue, shortness of breath, confusion or near-fainting. The important pattern isn’t “50 plus any sensation.” It is a slow reading that coincides with symptoms suggesting your brain and body may not be getting the blood flow they need.
Call emergency services if your heart rate is suddenly very low for you and you have chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, severe dizziness, confusion or another sign that something is seriously wrong. The American Heart Association gives the same symptom-based emergency advice. Don’t drive yourself if you feel faint.
A clinician may review an electrocardiogram, medicines and conditions that can slow the heart, but a home article can’t choose those tests or tell you the cause. A pulse log is useful because it preserves timing and symptoms. It isn’t a substitute for an ECG.
Do this now: draw seven rows on one sheet of paper and put it beside your bed. Tomorrow morning, count your wrist pulse for 60 seconds before coffee and write whether you had any symptoms. That first comparable reading is the safest way to move from “is a resting heart rate of 50 normal for non-athletes” to a decision based on your own pattern.
